CAPT Seth Burton

Submariner
Navy

OSC '05, Freiburg, Germany

With a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, CAPT Seth Burton continued his education at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit and Submarine Officer Basic Course.

In 1996, he was assigned to his first submarine, the USS JEFFERSON CITY (SSN-759), where he served as Electrical Assistant, Reactor Control Assistant, Chemistry and Radiological Control Assistant, Damage Control Assistant and Assistant Engineer. Following this assignment, he was a Submarine and Nuclear Field Recruiting Program Manager; Student at Submarine Officer Advanced Course; and Department Head/Engineering Officer on the USS KENTUCKY (SSBN-737).

In 2004, he was selected as an Olmsted Scholar, starting his experience in 2005 at the University of Freiburg in Germany.

“The Olmsted Scholar Program taught me how important it is to go outside your own world and realize how many different perspectives there are. This is important for leaders in order to relate to others better, and I apply this to how I support those entrusted to me.”

After his time as a Scholar, he returned to an operational assignment as Executive Officer on the Los Angeles Class attack submarine, USS NEWPORT NEWS (SSN-750). In recent years, he has served as Executive Officer, Commander Submarine Force Tactical Readiness and Evaluation Team and Commanding Officer of the Los Angeles Class attack submarine, USS SCRANTON (SSN-756).

Continuing his 20 years of service, CAPT Burton serves today as the Commander, USS FLORIDA (SSGN-728).
